[ Smile ]
[Original fiction]
There was this boy and he was terminally ill.
I hadn’t known his name save for the outlining symmetry of his face because it had always seemed to stand out, smile that had touched his lips like a ghosting touch but was faded by the formation of words every time he’d spoken in soft lulling whispers. Eyes barely open and focused on invisible silhouettes that had been besides my reach or comprehension because what the living can’t see lay in waiting for the dying eyes of a boy who had barely a week to live. Picturesque figure that had looked so fragile amongst sceneries of green wheat fields and linen sheets.
The pain fades out to white…he told me so.
Fingers locked in our twined hands like kissing snakes before the formation of a lonely smile touched his lips in a gentle sweeping of season I or he had left to see. Name, something that will get lost over coming of ages but the face I won’t ever forget because it’d stand out amongst scenes of nature but fade out under the naked eye amongst a busy crowd. He was beautiful and yet so young that it seemed as if the memory had come into passing in the form of a lazy summer dream.
“Your mother was just as kind as you.”
“How did you know?”
Silent sigh to match the way you were allowing your eyes to slip and that tired smile that was only reserved when you felt calm enough to live. “I talked to her this morning…she said she’d tell me more once I’d gone to live with her.”
It must have been a sign that I wouldn’t be seeing you during our usual lunch in but it was then that I could see how relieved you were to finally be rid of the pain, she’ll keep you well and I’ll wait for the smile in the grass when the sun sets over the horizon. Summer days like these remind me of you and just how important that stay had been in the hospital with a boy who had yet to see the ending of his days.
